Video Games HIStory, ’72-’07

If you were trying to sum up the history of video games, what would you put on the list? Here is a cool new video that sums up the “history of video games” in 5 minutes. Though I’m sure that no such list could satisfy everyone’s tastes, I’d say the video did a pretty good job of identifying all of the games that were considerably different than anything put before them (ie they didn’t list Megaman 2 etc). That being said, I am absolutely stunned that Oregon Trail, Zork, Asteriods, and even a few newer games like Portal were omitted from the list.

I’ve played 104 74 of the 144 114 listed. Rather than list the games I have played, here are the games I haven’t:

2007 Bioshock (Xbox 360)
2007 Motorstorm (Playstation 3)
2006 Viva Pinata (Xbox 360)
2006 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Xbox 360)
2006 Sam & Max Episodes 1-6 (PC)

  1. […] it turns out that may have been true. Of the 114 games listed in this video (via DocPop), I’ve played 83. Here are the 31 that I somehow skipped. As a side note, the biggest […]

    There’s actually 114 games, not 144. Looks like I played a lot more than I thought: http://kevnull.com/2008/04/history-of-video-games-1972-2007.html

Oh shit, you just ruined my night…
Here I thought I only missed about 1/3rd of the games presented, when I have actually only played a little more than half.
I thought there were 144, so I counted the ones I missed (40) and subtracted that to figure that I had played 104.

Time to play catchup then, non?

I’d recommend just about all the adventure games you missed there if you like those (Sam & Max, Leisure Suit Larry). Worms is a hoot especially with friends. Bioshock is terrifying and a great experience with the lights out. God of War and its sequels are gratuitous but gorgeous.

neat! really reminded me of how much i love video games. i’m just assuming you’re not an RPG fan if you missed chrono trigger, FF7 and ocarina of time. you should really play one/some/all of the warioware games, though, they’re incredibly creative and fun.

Yeah, I don’t really get into role playing games. Zelda was about as role playing as I got. I would like to try God of War, Bioshock, and Portal sometime though.

Great list! I know duneII and gods of war are still played by people at our video game company.
